Language development activities for toddlers

Communication is a crucial aspect of cognitive development in children.

Simple everyday activities that boost your toddler’s vocabulary.

  • Telephone game

A toy telephone can be a great tool to develop language. From teaching simple words like “hello” to teaching manners this is a great game.

  • Sing with the child

Singing lyrics of rhymes and songs can build the child’s vocabulary while having fun. The child may also learn new words and even grammar and proper usage.

  • Name the thing

Point to different objects in the house and ask your toddler to name them. This can be played outdoors too. You may help the child with the name until the child can say themselves.

  • Read books

Reading at least 1 book every night can develop language and vocabulary. You may also point to the pictures in the book and encourage the child to say the word or the story.

  • Toys and puppets

Give the child toys and puppets and encourage them to have conversations. This also builds creativity and imagination.

  • Stress on the details

Encourage the child to speak in detail. For eg., instead of saying “car” say “it’s a car. It’s a blue long car.”
