Magda Gerber described a safe space as one in which if for some reason the parent was locked out of the house for a few hours, the child would be safe. They would probably be hungry, sad and needing a nappy change but otherwise unharmed.
- Child has the freedom to move, touch and explore without unnecessary limitations.
- Develops concentration through uninterrupted play.
- Develops independent play and consistently can play for longer and longer periods.
- Parents can have time to themselves because they’re not having to watch their babies or toddlers’ every move. Just think you can drink your coffee HOT, pee alone in peace or read a book.
- Parents feel more relaxed- everyone feels more relaxed with a yes space.
- Parent isn’t constantly saying “no” “don’t touch” “stop that’s not safe”.
- Less frustration for both parent and child.
