It’s not something you ever want to worry about, so it’s good to know the basics of choking first aid.
What to do if a baby is choking?
- Verify baby is choking, not nagging. If your baby chokes while eating, remove your baby from the high chair. Have someone call 911.
- Position baby face down on your forearm resting your thigh.
- Make sure baby’s head is lower than the chest.
- Give 5 forceful back blows between baby’s shoulder blades with the heal of your hand.
- Turn baby’s face up on your arm, cradling the head in your hand. Rest your forearm (or the baby) on your thigh, and position baby’s head lower than the chest.
- Give 5 chest thrusts in the center of your baby’s chest with the pads of your fingers.
- Repeat back blows and chest thrusts until the object is dislodged.
Consider taking a first aid and CPR course so that you’re prepared in case the unthinkable happens.
Be sure to always call 911 or your local emergency services if your baby is choking (aka when the airway is obstructed and baby can’t breathe).
