Night feeds by age for babies

The first year

Night feeds can be tough if you are the only parent doing them. And contrary to some belief most babies are not capable of sleeping through the night at 4 months. Make sure you take your cues from your trusted pediatrician or LC. For breastfeeding mamas, remember you can pump and your partner or another caregiver can feed the baby, too.

Should you wake a sleeping baby? Yes, sometimes. Newborns (0-3) months who sleep longer than 3-4 hours may need to be awakened, especially if there is a concern about weight gain.

If your baby isn’t sleeping through the night by 12 months, it’s probably not hunger and more about connection and/habit causing them to wake up. If you’re fine with it, then there is no problem.

Remember: there is no one size fits all for babies and sleep. If it’s working for you and your family, then it’s all good.

Lastly, it’s worth pointing that when you look at this, in most cases it’s mom handling thr night wakes, and having interrupted sleep for 12+ straight months is absolutely exhausting. Make sure that you’re able to take care of yourself in other ways, like nourishing yourself with healthy foods, and exercising!
