Kids are more successful in school when parents take an active interest in their homework as it helps in showing kids that what they do at school is important.
Helping the kids with their homework does not mean that parents have to spend hours with their kids. Parents can be supportive in other ways by helping them to understand the problem, explaining a tricky problem, etc. Guiding kids in doing their homework might even benefit the parents, as they might learn a thing or two.
There are some other tips that parents can use while guiding their little ones to complete their homework:
Schedule a regular study time
Parents should set up study time for their kids. Some of them prefer to work in the afternoon after having their snacks and taking short naps. Some of them prefer to do their homework in the afternoon. So parents should set up a schedule according to what suits best to their child.
Set up a homework-friendly area
Make sure to have a well-lit place for the kids to complete their homework. Keep all the materials like paper, pencil, table, and eraser, within the reach of the child so that they complete their homework at a faster pace.
Keep distractions to minimum
Mobile phones, TV, and all electronic gadgets should be kept away when children complete their homework, as a little bit of sound might distract them which results in a lack of concentration.
Know the teachers
Know the teachers very well by attending school events, regular parent-teacher meetings, or just staying connected to them through your mobile phones, so that you are aware of what’s going on in the school which will help in clarifying the doubts.
Help them make a plan
If your kids are having hefty assignments to tackle, then encourage your child to take small breaks in between, or divide the work in small chunks so that the child does not feel pressurised and tired.
Make sure kids do their work
Parents can act as motivators and supporters for their children. But they should make sure that their child is finishing their homework by themselves otherwise their child will not learn to be independent and will not learn from their own mistakes that they make while doing their homework.
Praise their work and effort
Parents should appreciate the child’s effort when they complete their homework by themselves. As a result, the child feels happy and acknowledged for the work that they have done.
Set a good example
Do your kids ever see you diligently balancing your budget or reading a book? Kids are more likely to follow their parents' examples than their advice.
