Newborn hair: Everywhere or barely there, it’s all normal

When your newborn enters the world, one of the first things you’re likely to see is their hair… or their shiny bald head.

Have you heard the old wives’ tale that if you have a lot of acid reflux (heartburn) in pregnancy, your baby will have a TON of hair?

Now we don’t have a lot of evidence that this is the case, but a lot of parents of babies with long hair DO say they had a lot of reflux!

Whether or not your baby is born with a full head of hair may not mean they will keep it…and if your baby is born with no hair doesn’t mean it won’t grow in over the next few months.

Babies usually lose some if not all of the hair they’re born with during the first 6 months due to normal response to hormones post-pregnancy which kick off the normal phase of hair turnover called telogen.

This phase is replaced with a new growth phase and you may see that your baby’s new hair is a different colour or texture than its original colour.
