Calm-down corners are a fantastic alternative to time out…But, they are NOT for forced isolation.
Calm down corners are a space for both parent and child to use at first where the parent:
- Models the skill of staying calm when triggered.
- Helps the child identify their own emotions.
- Helps the child unveil their needs.
- Identifies the child’s nervous system.
- Offers to calm and grounding strategies to get a child’s nervous system back into the green zone.
There are a lot of questions asked by the parents regarding whether the sensory tools, colouring books, crayons and fidget tools all stay in the Calm Down Corner 24/7 or if they’re brought out only when the space is used.
It has been suggested, to teach your children that these tools stay in this place to help them regulate when they have big feelings.
The more you use this space together, the more comfortable your child will feel going to it on their own.
