Important things to do for toddlers when you bring the newborn home

Becoming a big brother or sister can be tough on a toddler.

Bringing home a new baby can be wonderful but also an adjustment to your toddler. Your toddler has to adjust to the new baby, might feel jealous at times, and in some cases show aggression toward the new baby.

They suddenly go from having you all to themselves to having to share you with a newborn, who is naturally very demanding of your time and energy.

You can expect to see more big feelings or tricky behaviours as your toddler adjusts to life with the new babe.

One of the most important things you can do for your toddler is to reassure him/her of your unconditional love.

Here are three ways you can do just that…

  • Reminding your toddler that you’re thinking of them. “I” m the luckiest mum in the world to be your mum’.
  • Prioritising small pockets of time to spend with your toddler. “Yes! I would love to play with you. I’ll be ready in 5 minutes once I’m finished here.’
  • Accepting and validating their big feelings. “You’re feeling frustrated, it’s okay to feel frustrated.”
