There’s a ton of confusion around pacifier use!
There are pros and cons, but ultimately it’s up to you to decide. No one knows your situation and your baby as well as you do.
Pacifiers are preferred over fingers because you can get rid of them to help in the weaning process. One thing to emphasize is that pacifier use doesn’t cause nipple confusion. But it can cause a low milk supply. This isn’t to shame you for using a pacifier in those early weeks, but to educate. It is normal for newborns to want to eat almost constantly. They may be fussy and act hungry right after you feed them. This is normal, and you should continue to nurse them, even if your breasts feel soft or you think you don’t have any more milk. Because you do! Your milk supply isn’t finite. If you continue to nurse on demand, in a day or two your milk supply will increase and satisfy your baby’s needs.
If you use a pacifier instead of nursing on demand, you’ll find that your milk supply drops because your supply is based on demand. The more your baby “demands” (nurses), the more milk you’ll make.
You can use a pacifier with your newborn, but use it only after your baby is showing cues of feeling satisfied.
